Welcome to the Black History Month 2025 LibGuide! This LibGuide provides access to books, movies, websites, and other media to celebrate Black voices. All materials are available online through the Stevens Memorial Library.
The origins of Black History Month began in 1926 when Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History established Black History week, which took place in the second week of February. This week was chosen because it includes the birthdays of both Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. It became Black History Month in 1976 when President Gerald R. Ford issued a presidential proclamation for the United States to recognize the significance and importance of Black history.
