Black History Month 2022: North Andover Events

In this season when the weather or travel conditions are questionable, check the schedule for cancellations before venturing out.

Walking Tours

Walking Tour of Banners in Old Center

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5

11am -1 pm

Free – Advanced Reservations Recommended

Masks are required for indoor portions of the tour.

Bundle up for a 1.7-mile walk to see four of the eight banners created for Black History Month, and learn a bit about the people being celebrated. Hot chocolate will be served half way through the tour.

Park around the Common and meet at the corner of Osgood and Andover Street at 11:00am and we’ll walk over to Stevens Coolidge House and Gardens.

On this tour you will learn about Elizabeth Freeman at the Stevens Coolidge House, William Monroe Trotter at the Youth Center, Salem Poor at the Historical Society and Cato Freeman at North Parish church. Lastly, we’ll head down Academy Road to the Second Burying Ground where Cato Freeman is buried before heading back to our cars.

Free – Meet at the School Administration building, 566 Main Street

Masks are required for indoor portions of the tour.

Bundle up for a 2-mile walk to see four of the eight banners created for Black History Month, and learn a bit about the people being celebrated.

With limited parking at the School Admin building, the starting point for the tour, you may want to park at Kittridge or the Middle School and walk over.

On this tour you will learn about Lucy Foster at the School Administration building, Charlotte Forten at the Library, Sarah Parker Remond at Town Hall, and Zipporah Potter Atkins at the Senior Center. At the end of the tour we will walk back to your cars. If you are not able to walk the route, call the Senior Center (978-688-9560) to reserve a seat on their shuttle.

Cato Freeman and Lucy Foster are the two most studied people of color in the Andovers, yet we still struggle to understand who they were and even how they lived. The way we interpret their history is shaped by our own cultural biases. Elaine Clements, Executive Director of the Andover Center for History and Culture, and Carol Majahad, Coordinator of Museum Education at the North Andover Historical Society, will share Lucy and Cato’s evolving stories.

Gabby’s work analyzes personal and societal racial identities, particularly among descendants of the African diaspora, and their effects on policy in the United States. Her research interests include the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, immigration, eugenics/race science, inequity, and policy in the United States. Join long time guide of Naumkeag, Mission House and the Ashley House, Kendra Knisley, for a lecture about the life and legacy of Elizabeth Freeman. This lecture will feature stories on her enslavement in with Colonel Ashley in what is now known as the Ashley House in Sheffield. MA and her fight for freedom which led to her settling down in her own home in Stockbridge where she lived her life as a free woman working closely with the Sedgewick family. In honor of her life and in celebration of Black History Month for an hour-long lecture hosted via zoom.
