Welcome to the Black History Month 2023 Liguide! This Libguide provides access to books, movies, websites and other media about Black History available online and through the Stevens Memorial Library and Merrimack Valley Library Consortium.
The origin of Black History Month began in 1926 when Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History established Black History Week which took place in the second week of February. This week was chosen because it includes the birthdays of both Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. It became Black History Month in 1976 when President Gerald R. Ford issued a presidential proclamation for the United States to recognize the significance and importance of black history.
Black History Month takes place in February each year and it is an event that promotes Black History while raising awareness of the past accomplishments of African Americans.
